Castle of Guzman el Bueno

The castle was originally built as a Moorish fortress (alcazar) in 960 AD on the orders of Caliph Abderraman III as a protection against invaders from Africa. The castle has recently been renovated. It was named after Alonso Perez de Guzman, who in 1294 defended the city from the Moors’ siege. He sacrificed his son’s life to save the city and was rewarded by the king. He was also given the right to fish for tuna using the almadraba net system, which made his family very wealthy. The castle has an irregular elongated shape and is believed to have been built on the remains of a Roman fortress. There are also two towers on the castle, one of which is called Torre de Guzman El Bueno. There is also a statue of the king who first re-conquered the city from the Moors in 1292 (Sancho IV) and one of Guzman outside the castle. Visitors can tour the castle on certain days of the week, and during the summer they sometimes host concerts inside the castle.
