During the Moorish period, San Pedro de Alcantara was known as “Al-Qantara” which means “The Bridge” in Arabic, it was a small fortified town that was built to protect the surrounding area from the invaders. After the Christian reconquest of Spain, San Pedro de Alcantara was ruled by the Counts of Buenavista, and it continued to be a small farming and fishing village.

The town’s mild climate, beautiful beaches and proximity to Marbella made it a popular spot for tourists. Many of the hotels and tourist facilities that were built during this time still exist today.

In recent years, San Pedro de Alcantara has been working to promote a more sustainable and responsible form of tourism, focusing on the preservation of the natural and cultural heritage, and trying to reduce the environmental impact of the tourism industry.
